HIS MUCH OBLIGED,

HUMBLE SERVANT,

London,

Aug. 23, 1783.

M. J. ARMSTRONG.

To the PUBLIC.

HE lingular utility of a corre& Travelling

Directory muft be obvious even to the meaneft
capacity ; an apology is therefore totally unneceflary. The
Author, however, is compelled to make this juft, though
trite obfervation, that notwithftanding the uncommon de-
mand for fimilar productions, public liberality, as in moft
other inftances, has been too frequently proftituted to
mercenary purpofes.

In May i 773, propofals were offered for publifhing a
Survey of the Post-Roads from London, by Car-
lille and Newcaftle, to Edinburgh, in One Volume,
at 1 os., 6d. to which -the Author acknowledges to have
received a numerous and refpeCtable lift of fubfcribers :
But to have each of thefe two great roads, with their fe-
veral, branches in One Volume , would have increafed it to
a'lize'by far too large for the pocket, and required a more
general fale than could be fuppofed to indemnify the ex-
pences of the publication.

This Volume, coiriprehending the 'Poft-roads from
London, by Wetherby and York, to Newcaftle ; and
from Newcaftle, by Berwick, Coldftream and Kelfo,
to Edinburgh, is humbly prefen ted. to the! Public, not
only as a work complete in itfelf. \ but likewife as a fpcci-
men of fuch future Surveys on the fame plan as he means
to undertake fo fpon as the public opinion is afcertained
with regard to this.

It was the Author’s intention to have given fuch hif-
toricaLextra&s, and traditional information as would
have, in fome meafure, elucidated the Hiftory, Antiqui-
ties, Conftitution, Produce, and Commerce.of the coun-
try within the limits of the Survey ; but this he found

would

X 3 )

would have retarded the publication for fuch a length of
time, as might have incurred the difpleafure of thofe who
had contributed fo liberally to its encouragement. By this
omiflion, however, it is prefumed he has not leflened, in
any degree, the merit or utility of the publication ; but,
upon the whole, has fo improved on the original defign,
as to render it the mod accurate and comprehenlive of the
kind extant.

To be filent as to the authorities from which this Tra-
velling Companion is compiled would, by fome, be
deemed an unpardonable omiflion ; the Publifher there-
fore informs the Purchafer, that 300 miles of the road
were taken from Surveys made by his father. Captain
Armstrong, and himfelf ; and that the remainder was
laid down from his own obfervations, adopting fuch a£Iual
furveys as he could afluredly confide in. The fcale to
which the whole is reduced, is Half an Inch to a
Statute Mile, and the extent of each page Twelve
Miles by Six.

The Plan and Manner of diftinguifhing the different
objects defcribed in the Survey, are fo very obvious, that
little explanation is required : the Publifher will only ob-
ferve, that the moft afliduous application and minute at-
tention have not been wanting to complete this very labo-
rious and expenfive undertaking.

In order to obviate, as much as poflible, the long-com-
plained-of difficulty of finding the real diftance between
each  poft-ftage,  the  following  Tables  are  fubjoined;
which are intended not only as a comparative view of the
uncertain and incorrect diftance charged on fome ftages,
but as infertions of the utmoft fervice to Travellers, whe-
ther riding Poft, in a Chaife, or in a Stage-coach.
